About the Item

Cartier designed this stunning luxury copper and brass box. An extraordinary and captivating creation by Cartier, this rare copper and brass box—crafted in France circa 1950—is a masterwork of luxury design and historical intrigue. Known as an "Enigma Box," it employs Leonardo da Vinci's specular writing technique, where the engraved message on the lid appears indecipherable until viewed in a mirror, revealing a hidden narrative. If you look at the box straight on, the engraved text on the top is a mystery. Placing the lidded box in front of a mirror allows the hidden message to be deciphered. That rare piece was crafted in France circa 1950. The mirrored inscription unveils a private wedding announcement from 1959, inviting guests to a New York society marriage between Joan Honey Bernstein and Frederic Sanford Berman. This secret message transforms the box from a decor object into a time capsule of mid-century elegance and social history. The mysterious message reads: "Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Bernstein have the honor of announcing the marriage of their daughter Joan Honey to Mr. Frederic Sanford Berman on Sunday, the nineteenth of April, nineteen hundred and fifty-nine, New York." Lined in wood and signed with Cartier's engraved designer logo signature on the underside, the box reflects the maison's commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and storytelling. The interplay of polished copper and brass adds warmth and architectural sophistication, while the mirrored decoding element introduces a layer of mystery and intellectual charm. Cartier objects of this nature—combining design, secrecy, and provenance—are exceedingly rare and highly sought after by collectors of luxury memorabilia and 20th-century design. This piece is a conversation-starting artifact, a symbol of discreet opulence, and a testament to Cartier's legacy of blending artistry with enigma. This is a unique historical memorabilia and an iconic Cartier piece. Dimensions: 5 in wide (12.5 cm) by 4 in deep (10 cm) by 1.75 in high (4.5 cm).
