Pair of George III Inlaid Satinwood Cutlery Boxes, Late 18th Century

About

Pair of George III inlaid satinwood cutlery boxes, late 18th century. Each with a sloping serpentine-front hinged top inlaid with a decorative shell design, metal escutcheon plates, and enclosing a fitted interior. Some of the most celebrated English cabinetmakers rose to prominence during the Georgian era, those being Thomas Chippendale, Robert Adam, Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite. During the reign of George III, one of the most significant turning points in the fashions of the interior was moving away from the robustly and heavily carved Rococo styles of Thomas Chippendale to the more rectilinear, Neoclassical designs of Adam, Sheraton and Hepplewhite. Mahogany became king, gone was the era of walnut and claw-and-ball feet. Gaining popularity between 1750 and 1790, Neoclassicism favored classic motifs and symmetry. Property from an East Coast Collector. Presents well overall. With general overall marks, nicks, surface scratches, tiny losses and repairs consistent with age and use. The veneers with scattered lifting, losses, minor areas of infill and restorations. Scattered minor shrinkage cracks. Tops do not sit flush.
