  • Antique Bronze Box with Gothic Church Window Panels by Adolph Frankau&Co, London
    Located in Lisse, NL
Rare size, solid bronze, Victorian Gothic box with multiple church window-like panels. Over the years we have sold a number of rare and unique boxes, but never a Gothic Revival one of this length and looking like a medieval antiquity. Let us start of by saying that this antique box truly looks much better in real life than in our photos. There are as many as 28 Gothic church-like panels depicting biblical scenes all around. They are not the most detailed, but we feel this was done in an attempt to make this antique box look truly time-worn and medieval. Anyone who knows what it took (in terms of time and skills) to create this box will be just as enthousiastic as we were when we first saw it. It would have taken the artisan(s) working for Adolph Frankau of London quite a few hours (if not days) to first design this luxurious box piece on paper. The Gothic cathedral windows would then have to be hand carved out of wood or handmade using clay or another material. Then molds would have to be made from those sculptural plaques after which they would have been cast in bronze. The castings would have to be polished and the panels would have to somehow be welded together. Then any sharp edges would have to be grinded down and all the pieces of this box would also have been patinated and the lid hinged. When you look at this box with that in mind then you will see it in a whole new perspective. Have you also noticed the beautiful Gothic leaf pattern on the lock plate? This fully marked antique box comes with a working lock and key, but we will not try to close it, because one never knows if it will open again. If it won't then you have to damage this beautiful antique to be able to open it again. This rare and long antique box actually is a copy of what special Gothic boxes would look like in the 14th, 15th and 16th century. Back in those (Medieval) days these long Gothic boxes were made for safe-keeping and transporting parchment rolls and/or ordinances. In all our years we have never seen an antique copy...

  • Stunning Handcrafted Late 1800s Gothic Casket with Peacock & Gargoyle Sculptures
    Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful and rare Gothic Revival treasure box with bronze handle. If you are a collector of antique boxes and/or if you are looking for an extraordinary jewelry box to grace your credenza or side table then this unique and top quality made specimen in the Gothic style could be perfect. Gothic Revival boxes are very hard to find and we have never seen one with such prodigious carvings on all sides. The unique and cat-like dragon gargoyles (with fangs) that look like they are carrying this casket, are just some of the stunningly carved and detailed sculptures that make this antique rarity even more artistic and impressive. Another great feature are the peacock sculptures. In Christianity the peacock is the symbol of purity. Christians believe that once someone has passed their soul rises and goes to heaven. This is why in earlier times Christians would spread the feathers of a peacock over the deceased since it symbolized a pure soul that was immune to corruption. The peacock also represents immortality, resurrection, and the spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ and the Christian church. Have you also noticed the top quality details on both ends of the bronze handle on top? The quality of that ornamental work is of the absolute highest standard also. There are many more incredibly beautiful, hand carved details and together they show that no expense was spared to create one of the most amazing Gothic caskets...

  • Rare Antique Italian Jewelry Box Casket with Gilt Bronze Lockplate & Hasp Attrib
    Located in Forney, TX
A scarce antique Italian fall-front jewelry box with lockplate and hasp attributed to Jacopo and Lodovico del Duca. Lockplate and Hasp designed circa 1570, date of manufacture unknown, attributed to the late 16th century Roman foundry of Jacopo (c. 1520-1604) and Ludovico (fl. 1551-1601) del Duca. The rectangular drop-front box casket, circa 1880, signed L'PUPLET, features an earlier finely cast gilt bronze lock plate with a coat-of-arms and hasp, mounted on drop-front chest of drawers form box covered in embossed and gilded paper, having fall-front panel opening to reveal three interior drawers, all lined in red velvet. The wallpaper covering the box's exterior features bamboo, birds, and flowers in the Japanesque taste (orientalist) popular in Europe in the 1870s and 1880. To the interior of the fall front is a circular stamp with the name of the workshop or store (possibly L'PUPLET) somewhat obscured, and the city "Burxelles" indicating that the box was likely made or retailed in that city in the late 19th century. Marks to box: L'PUPLET, BRUXELLES Inscription: 13, 14, 15 (Interior drawers inscribed on the verso of their backboards in script from top to bottom, respectively) Provenance / Acquisition: The origin of the elaborate lockplate with hasp on the front of the piece is more intriguing. At least 76 lockplates of this design have been recorded in major museums, private collections, and in the antiques trade across the Western World. For example, lockplates of this pattern are in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the State Museum of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin, the Museum Cicico in Bologna, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Dallas Museum of Art in Texas, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museo di Palazzo Venezia in Rome, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.[1] Specialists in Renaissance bronzes, especially Charles Avery...
