Unique Late 19th Century Dutch Colonial Teakwood Box Inlaid with Enamel Plaque

About the Item

Striking quality and marvelous condition antique box. This all-handcrafted box and work of art into one is special for many reasons. First of all, there is the beauty of the design and the incredible workmanship. This box breathes nothing but quality, artistry and cultural history. For the makers to have incorporated a stunning and vibrant enamel plaque/picture into the lid of this box, makes it a rare and remarkable work of art and also the perfect display piece for collectors and connaisseurs. We think that this striking box was specially made for a 'bleeker' in Dutch colonial times in Indonesia. A 'bleeker' was a person who cleaned/bleached linnen and clothing in the days when soap and/or detergents were not available yet. The beautiful patina of this solid teak wood box makes the striking colors of the enamel picture stand out even more. This work of antique craftsmanship truly is of museum quality and condition and it can be used for all kinds of purposes. Again great value for money and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days is complimentary. Maximum length x width x height when closed: 8.5 x 7.5 x 3.5 inches. • Antique Large & Rare, Late 1800s Hand Crafted Wooden Carriage Novelty Cigar Box
    Located in Lisse, NL
Large, masterly hand-crafted and amazing condition wooden antique coach cigar holder. If you are a collector of truly unique antiques in general and of cigar or carriage related pieces in particular then this one of a kind centerpiece could be flying your way soon. Over the years we have sold a few antique novelty cigar holders, but never one of this size and never in the form of a carriage. Back in the day when this type of carriages were the means of transportation for only the wealthiest of western societies, smoking cigars certainly was a manly thing to do and very much 'en vogue'. Smoking cigars also proved that you had made it in this world. For all those reasons, this hand-crafted carriage cigar holder has always been and always will be a statement piece. We, as antique enthousiast, first and foremost fell in love with the workmanship and with the honest and timeless way in which this carriage was hand-crafted. We also love how perfectly balanced and realistic it is and for us to have been given the opportunity to buy yet another unique antique and in such amazing condition again felt like a blessing. The former owner, in our view, had gone a little overboard in trying to be the best custodian, because he kept this unique antique in an aquarium-like glass dome. He certainly succeeded, because this carriage cigar holder is in THE best possible condition. The quality in the details and the overal balance of this coach mixed with the warm patina of the antique wood is what makes this aesthetically pleasing antique a real gem to own and to look at. We believe this work of antique craftsmanship is of museum quality and condition and no matter where you decide to have it on display, this work of art will never fail to impress. In all honesty who would not be impressed (and amused) when being offered a cigar that is in the door of a large, handcrafted, 19th century model carriage...

  • Stunning Handcrafted Late 1800s Gothic Casket with Peacock & Gargoyle Sculptures
    Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful and rare Gothic Revival treasure box with bronze handle. If you are a collector of antique boxes and/or if you are looking for an extraordinary jewelry box to grace your credenza or side table then this unique and top quality made specimen in the Gothic style could be perfect. Gothic Revival boxes are very hard to find and we have never seen one with such prodigious carvings on all sides. The unique and cat-like dragon gargoyles (with fangs) that look like they are carrying this casket, are just some of the stunningly carved and detailed sculptures that make this antique rarity even more artistic and impressive. Another great feature are the peacock sculptures. In Christianity the peacock is the symbol of purity. Christians believe that once someone has passed their soul rises and goes to heaven. This is why in earlier times Christians would spread the feathers of a peacock over the deceased since it symbolized a pure soul that was immune to corruption. The peacock also represents immortality, resurrection, and the spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ and the Christian church. Have you also noticed the top quality details on both ends of the bronze handle on top? The quality of that ornamental work is of the absolute highest standard also. There are many more incredibly beautiful, hand carved details and together they show that no expense was spared to create one of the most amazing Gothic caskets...

  • Antique Bronze Box with Gothic Church Window Panels by Adolph Frankau&Co, London
    Located in Lisse, NL
Rare size, solid bronze, Victorian Gothic box with multiple church window-like panels. Over the years we have sold a number of rare and unique boxes, but never a Gothic Revival one of this length and looking like a medieval antiquity. Let us start of by saying that this antique box truly looks much better in real life than in our photos. There are as many as 28 Gothic church-like panels depicting biblical scenes all around. They are not the most detailed, but we feel this was done in an attempt to make this antique box look truly time-worn and medieval. Anyone who knows what it took (in terms of time and skills) to create this box will be just as enthousiastic as we were when we first saw it. It would have taken the artisan(s) working for Adolph Frankau of London quite a few hours (if not days) to first design this luxurious box piece on paper. The Gothic cathedral windows would then have to be hand carved out of wood or handmade using clay or another material. Then molds would have to be made from those sculptural plaques after which they would have been cast in bronze. The castings would have to be polished and the panels would have to somehow be welded together. Then any sharp edges would have to be grinded down and all the pieces of this box would also have been patinated and the lid hinged. When you look at this box with that in mind then you will see it in a whole new perspective. Have you also noticed the beautiful Gothic leaf pattern on the lock plate? This fully marked antique box comes with a working lock and key, but we will not try to close it, because one never knows if it will open again. If it won't then you have to damage this beautiful antique to be able to open it again. This rare and long antique box actually is a copy of what special Gothic boxes would look like in the 14th, 15th and 16th century. Back in those (Medieval) days these long Gothic boxes were made for safe-keeping and transporting parchment rolls and/or ordinances. In all our years we have never seen an antique copy...
