19th English Turnbridge Ware Rosewood Jewelry Box With Inlaid Mosaic

About the Item

19th century English Tunbridge ware jewelry box with exquisite inlay of various woods, ebony, rosewood, fruit wood, walnut, mahogany. With intricate geometric pattern inlay throughout and star patterns in the corners. Lovely shaped top. The rosewood box of rectangular form extensively inlaid with geometric mosaic decoration to the exterior. Lined with purple velvet and retaining the original hand cut oval looking glass mirror. Circa 1845. With working lock and key with silk tassel. Tunbridge ware originate from the popular sap town, Tunbridge Wells in Kent. The spa became known in the 17th Century for their therapeutic waters. By the 18th century, Tunbridge Wells was a hugely popular resort. Shops and stalls were set up to sell local work of distinction to visitors as souvenirs. These were inlaid with a variety of banding and panels of geometric designs. This box is a fine example of the type. 6.5 high 10.25 wide 6.5 deep
