Antique French Mahogany Brass Inlaid Jewelry Casket Box Tahan Paris 19th Century

About the Item

A very elegant large French well figured mahogany inlaid with Brass stringing Casket of very generous proportions and of outstanding Museum quality, firmly attributed to Alphonse Tahan Paris (1830-1880), official master cabinetmaker to Napoleon III. Last quarter of the 19th century. This finely executed inlay depicts swags of scrolling flowers and leafy foliage, within a Greek Key Pattern. The center has initials HT. The double hinged lid opens to reveal a drop-down front enclosing two pull out drawers, the interior is also finished in mahogany and decorated using brass stringing, raised on its original four bun feet. These pieces were popular during the 19th century and were used by affluent ladies for storing their scarves and other small items of clothing. Condition: Superb untouched condition, lock and key are present and working. Measures: Height 8.5” (21.5cm), width (at widest) 21” (53.5cm), depth 15" (38cm). Location: Dublin City, Ireland. A superb example of a French well figured brass inlaid Rosewood, late Victorian period double interior section tea caddy of flat rectangular outline, generous proportions and outstanding quality, all areas are edged with self-quadrant mouldings, complete with original lock and key. Last quarter of the 19th century. The hinged cover opens to reveal an original fitted interior of twin smooth lift out finial covers. Condition: superb condition with no losses to inlays, interior foil linings are quite worn. Baise underneath has wonderful age-wear, very nice untouched surface patination. An exceptionally fine quality example of a Lady’s or Gentleman’s English Regency Period polished brass mounted well figured Rosewood inlaid Boulle Style Jewellery or Sewing Casket or Table Box made during the first quarter of the Nineteenth Century, of English origin. Raised on its original bun feet, the quality of this item is firmly attributed to furniture makers Gillows of Lancaster. The rectangular form with hinged lid opening to reveal its original yellow silk lined interior, complete with lift out sectional tray. This exquisite casket is raised on four generous beaded bun supports. Condition: Good condition with nice patination, no losses to brass inlays. Lock is present and working, lacking key.
