Chinese Immortality Jewelry Box
Crafted in the early 20th century in China's Jiangsu province, this jewelry chest was once used by a Qing-dynasty woman to contain her personal treasures. A lock in the shape of two lingzhi fungi tops the jewelry box, symbols of longevity and immortality, while below it, a quadrilobe lock adorns each drawer. Handmade of brass, the locks contrast the chest’s birch construction, left unfinished to showcase its natural grain and golden color. The chest’s lid lifts to reveal a framed mirror.
