About the Item

A fine antique Delft tobacco jar. From the Dutch De Drie Klokken (The Three Bells) Pottery Factory. Together with a period brass cover. Originally designed as a vessel for 'Santo Domingo' tobacco (in the form of long plugs or twists of tobacco) in a tobacconist's shop in the second half of the 18th century. The covered urn or jar is decorated with depictions of West Indians' indigenous peoples referring to the American tobacco trade. All in all, simply a wonderful piece of 18th Century Delft Pottery! Date: Late 18th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There are old professional stapled repairs throughout together with some fill and inpainting. There are typical glaze losses to the rim and foot rim, some additional fritting and losses to the glaze throughout, and one eraser sized concussion mark to the side wall. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. The period cover has light bends, dings, and indentations throughout.
