Sigvard Nilsson for Söwe Konst Sweden Teak Tobacco Tobak Box

About the Item

Vintage teak container, vessel, or box was designed by Sigvard Nilsson for Söwe Konst Sweden in 1950s-1960s. The box features the rectangular form with rounded corners and circular storage space; it is decorated with burned-in word TOBAK, framed by lines, offering a playful interpretation of Tobacciana theme in Modernist decor. The organic, sculptural Scandinavian Modern shape and decor of the box showcase the beautiful wood texture of the minimal, modern piece. The box is signed on the bottom with "AB Söwe Konst Sövestad Sweden Genuine Teakwood"; it is in good vintage condition with beautiful, age-appropriate patina on the wood. We are offering a smaller sized teak bowl by Sigvard Nilsson for Söwe Konst in a separate listing. Sculptural, decorative box, distinguished with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence, will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Arts and Crafts, Transitional, Scandinavian Modern, Mid Century Modern, Japandi, Minimalist, Organic Modern, Collected, or Contemporary. Sigvard Nilsson (1938-2014) attended the Essem school in Malmö, Sweden, where he studied sculpture and crafts. In 1954 he started his own company, Söwe Konst, focusing on handmade utilitarian objects, such as trays, bowls and ladles. Sigvard Nilsson’s initial choice of material was birch and oak, but he started using teak when it was introduced in the Nordics in the early 1950s. Large portion of Söwe Konst pieces was imported to the US and Germany. Sigvard Nilsson was renowned in both the US and Sweden for his effortless-looking designs and knowledge of the wood.
