Chinese Large Mother of Pearl Mounted Armorial Tea Caddy for MacPherson

About the Item

A rare, incredible and large antique Chinese carved mother of pearl mounted tea caddy with armorial for MacPherson and dating from circa 1770. The rectangular casket shaped caddy has silver metal hinges, lock with original key and side swing carrying handles with a wooden carcass covered in carved mother of pearl panels with intricate scroll work and flowering prunus. The box has carved central cartouche to the cover with an armorial for MacPherson with an inscription reading TOUCH NOT THE CAT BUT A GLOVE the armorial with a central seated cat. The inner box is lined in red velvel with gold braiding and has three partitions for tea canisters. The base has an inset green baise. The box is offered in good condition with minor damage and losses as might be expected for a piece of this age but overall a rare and stunning example.

    An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone. The body is made up of eight oval shaped scenes of typical Chinese style with buildings and people picked out with inset abalone and mother of pearl and highlighted and contained within a gilded border.
