George III Tea Caddy Rosewood with Boxwood edges on Ball and Claw Feet

About

This is a good, high quality, English, Georgian period tea caddy, circa 1815. The tea caddy has a sarcophagus shape with two lidded internal compartments. It has been very carefully hand made of various contrasting woods. The main body is rosewood veneer which has been edged with a boxwood line inlay to all edges including diagonals, sides, tops, mid horizontal and around the base, with mahogany strips around the flat top of the inner compartment sides. The two inner lids are rosewood with boxwood edging and two small mahogany knobs. Two cast brass ring loop handles have been applied to the sides and it has four small brass ball and claw feet. It also has an inlaid diamond shaped Ivorine escutcheon to the front. There is a fitted brass lock which looks original to the piece but we do not have a key. The inside retains its fitted and padded interior to the underside of the lid. All these features combined add to the superior quality of this piece. Additionally the caddy has a lovely mellow color and patination due to use, polishing and natural ageing. We date this fine piece to the late Georgian period, circa 1815.
