Candleholder, Candlestick Candelabra Pair by Georg Jensen, 925 Sterling Silver

About the Item

Charming and very heavy candle holder pair by Georg Jensen. 925 sterling silver. Such heavy candlesticks by Georg Jensen are rare and coveted collectibles. Original condition. Unrestored. Total weight 2326 grams. (5,12795 Pounds lb) This chandelier is an excellent example of Georg Jensen's good sense for a harmonious balance of all parts of a design, which together form an integrated whole. The rich ornamentation is focused on the body of the chandelier and forms an interesting contrast to the airy, energetic expression of the arms. In this way, the design receives an elegant, timeless freshness. The floral decoration naturally develops from the forms. The softly curled, chiseled arms are reminiscent of flower stems and make poetic, playful patterns, while the top of the middle part is decorated by stylized grapes. The candelabra 324 was designed at the end of the First World War (1914-1918), at a time when unprecedented amounts of money were in circulation, trade flourished, and the silversmith reached record sales. In those years Georg Jensen created silver objects that were more richly decorated than usual for him. This is already evident in the two-arm candlestick 324, but can be seen even more in the five-armed candlestick 383 of 1920. The candlestick 324 is also referred to as a poppy candlestick because the body is in the shape of poppy capsules. These capsules are each soldered together in two halves, with the carver applying the various patterns and the hammered surface before the silversmith connects everything together. Silversmith had to be extra careful and make sure that everything was measured and put together in the right angle. Even the smallest inaccuracy would make the candlestick look crooked and let the candles drip.
