Pair of Charles X Candelabra Engraved with Napoleonic Symbols and Fountainebleau

About the Item

Pair of Charles X ormolu and patinated bronze candelabra with five arms and separate bobesches. The base of each candelabra is inscribed with an "N" for Napoleon, the Napoleonic eagle, and "Fontainebleau." The Chateau de Fontainebleau was restored by Napoleon, and was the site of his famous farewell speech to his faithful remaining officers after abdicating the throne in 1814. ("Soldiers of my Old Guard: I bid you farewell. For twenty years I have constantly accompanied you on the road to honor and glory. . . . ") The candelabra date from the Charles X period (circa 1820s), and probably were created as a tribute to Napoleon after his death in 1821. Provenance: Sotheby's New York, April 28, 2005, Lot 208.
