Set of two anna mae candlesticks / candleholders, recycled cast red-bronze, Chicago,USA, 2003. Jordan Mozer (b. 1958), Collection of the artist. Signed. Sizes vary up to 3" x 4" x 13.5" tall (7.6cm x 10 cm x 34 cm tall). Process and materials Made in Chicago. Hand carved maple sculptures were cast in 95% recycled red-bronze. The castings were polished and machined. Then they were bathed in elixirs and flames to create a deep surface patina. Story This set of cast-bronze AnnaMae candlesticks were created from sculptures hand carved by by the artist in 2003 for AnnaMae Restaurant in Biloxi Mississippi at the Beau Rivage Resort Hotel. They were re-imagined as candlesticks and presented to his wife on her birthday. Anna Mae was a Japanese-American restaurant in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Beau Rivage Resort Hotel. The restaurant drowned in Hurricane Katrina. The design of AnnaMae was inspired by the IDEA of eating sushi in Mississippi...The design was inspired by the serendipity of the Japanese homonym "anime" and the heartbreaker "Little Anna Mae" from a Mississippi Muddy Waters blues song. The sculptures which were transformed into candlesticks were inspired by Asian curly willow trees: in Japan, willows symbolize grace and femininity...The artist's mother, mother-in-law, and first born daughter all share the middle name Mae... Small batch studio furnishings Mozer Studios LLC handcrafts all of their small batch products. They are never mass produced. We invite our patrons to embrace the nuanced irregularities of form, surface and finish as evidence of that handwork, defining each piece as one of a kind.
