Lodge Style Antler Candleholder with Handforged Brass Base, circa 1880
About the Item
A decorative candleholder which is made of deer antlers mounted on a brass base. A roe deer trophy at the center, cased with brass. It is decorated with a wild boar tooth pendant. The candleholder is executed in Germany ca. 1880.
At the beginning of the 19th century the European nobility discovered antler furnishings for their hunting castles and countryseats. The furniture was either manufactured completely from e.g. stag antler, or it was decorated with antler pieces from the stag, deer, fallow deer and others to get a hunting desing. A famous example was the interior design of 'Jagdschloss Platte' (hunting castle Platte) of count William of Nassau near Wiesbaden, Germany in 1825.
