Very Fine Pair of Antique Continental Silver Mounted Rock Crystal Candlesticks

About the Item

The candlestick bodies of fine, translucent rock crystal accented with silver gilt mounts; the candlestick base mounts decorated with neo-Gothic style patterns and masked faces. The neo-Gothic style was a movement that began in England during the mid-18th century. Popularity of the neo-Gothic style grew rapidly in the early 19th century and spread from England into the rest of Europe. The trend continued for the duration of the 19th century, and remained the primary architectural style of choice for ecclesiastical and university structures well into the 20th century. Although the neo-Gothic style was primarily an architectural movement, it filtered into the decorative and fine arts. The neo-Gothic style drew heavily on the original Gothic style, including finials, decorative patterns, scalloping and traditional Gothic symbolism, such as the masks exhibited on the bases of these fine candlesticks. The Gothic style was was born in 12th century Paris and quickly spread throughout Europe, where it continued to influence the decorative arts until the 16th century. Importantly, the Gothic style was intent on naturalistic representation of forms, which represented a huge change from the preceding non-naturalistic Byzantine style that had dominated much of European art. As a result, Gothic art and design can often be hugely emotive, which helped to inspire feelings of religious devotion within the viewer.
