Pair of Early 1900s Forged Iron Candleholders from France

About the Item

This pair of forged iron candleholders was produced in France in the early 1900’s. The two holders have slightly different dimensions, indicating that they were crafted by hand. Each candleholder has two flat saucer-shaped bobeches beneath cylindrical capital cups. Elegant S-scroll arms flow towards a central ball joint, where they meet with a turned pricket that rises in between the cups. Four scrolled legs emanate from beneath the ball joint and are arranged in an “X” configuration. Mirroring the shape of the arms, the legs terminate on scrolled feet, giving the candleholders added grace. Our pair of French candleholders would look fantastic sitting on top of a fireplace mantel. The darkly patinated forged iron pieces can also be placed on a buffet, console, or side table.

  • Pair of Hand Forged 18th Century Spanish Iron Torchere Candle Holders
    Located in Dallas, TX
Full of charm and character, this pair of iron torchere candle holders were hand-forged in Spain during the 1700s. The visible strike marks made by the blacksmith, along with the flattened pin that affixes the highly scrolled arms add subtle nuances to the 21-inch tall candlesticks. At the end of each arm is a torch-like light sconce with a banded noix at the bottom, topped by a flat bobeche with a thin rim and a folded cylindrical capital. Rising a few inches above is a third light source with an identical bobeche and capital that extends from the central column. The three-light spread is supported by tripod bases featuring sinuous legs that have been embellished by roundels set within thin fluting. Our pair of Spanish torchere...

  • Early 1900s Regence Style Bleached Oak Partners Desk from France
    Located in Dallas, TX
As a transitional age in French history, the Regence period is known for furniture that showcases forms of the preceding period (Louis XIV), as well as early Louis XV stylings. In the case of this bleached oak partner’s desk, the motifs are prefigures of the Rococo style of Louis XV, while still maintaining the rectilinear form often seen with Louis XIV furnishings. Hand-carved in France in the early 1900s, the oak wood has been bleached more recently, resulting in a warm, golden brown hue with some fascinating wood grains. A cavetto molding graces the top on all sides, even in the slightly recessed areas above the leg holes. Both sides of the desk have been carved identically, with three belt drawers featuring arabesque margents with foliate shells and thin molding. Similar vertical carvings flank the doors, which are rectangular panels adorned with geometric and foliate motifs. Both doors to the right of the leg hole open to reveal three pull-out drawers, while the doors to the left front three shelves. The rectilinear form is softened by eight short cabriole legs, each with a paw foot pad, beneath a sinuous apron embellished with a foliate shell medallion over thin molding. Our well-carved partner’s desk...
