An antique French Charles X period Rosewood and Ormolu Portico clock circa 1830. The handsome proportions and neoclassical decoration on this clock make this a very desirable piece. The contrast between the lovely dark grain of the rosewood against the rich gleam of the ormolu (gilded bronze) makes an elegant presentation. This table or mantel clock would have been remarkably luxurious in an interior illuminated by both fire and candle light and given the time period would soon have been seen by the latest lighting innovation-gas lamps that were making their appearance in the most affluent of households. The clock works are framed by a pair of double columns whose tapered forms are banded by a collar of ormolu at the top and stand upon a square base also of ormolu. Inset upon each column is a series of vertical lines of ormolu that visually emphasize the height of the columns. This pattern of inlaid ormolu is also present outlining the flat panels of rosewood across the front and on both sides as well as the platform beneath the pendulum. Adding another level of visual interest is the symmetrical border of quarter round bobbin turned moulding seen at the top of the largest rectangular base as well on the underside of the flared edge just beneath the top. The architectural framework was chosen to focus attention upon the circular face of the clock and the pendulum that visibly swings from side to side. The circular dial is defined by Roman numerals in black along with the hour and minute hand in dark bronze to contrast against the pale enamel face. Surrounding the dial is a cast ormolu collar of deeply sculptural motifs woven together in a delightful celebration of the bounty of nature. The organic shape of the motifs seen around the dial are in sharp contrast to the style of the pendulum which harks back to the balanced and symmetrical nature of classicism. The clock works have been professionally restored and the clock is in fine working order. As the hands rotate about the dial the clock strikes the hours in sequence while sounding a single strike at the half hour. This clock also includes a winding key.
