Art Deco Mythology Clock
About the Item
This early Art Deco clock was designed in the 1920s to rest on or above a mantel. The blonde mahogany case is veneered with birch, ash, and jacaranda, with stylized female figures from mythology. A bat, a crescent moon and a flying hourglass complete the fantasy.
Inspired by book three of Roman poet Virgil's Georgics, which invoke the power of ancient gods. Many have observed the parallels between the dramatic endings of each half of this book and the irresistible power of their respective themes of love and death.
In this book, Virgil writes "Sed fugit interea, fugit inreparabile tempus" or translated, "fast flies meanwhile the irreparable hour". This is of course, where the phrase "time flies" originated. This is illustrated in this beautiful, painstakingly crafted clock.
