18th Century Antique Walnut Longcase Clock by James Blackborow of London

About the Item

An antique George II period patinated, walnut longcase clock by James Blackborow of London. This finely figured veneered clock with elegant proportions has an elegant ogee-shaped swept caddy top, surmounted with three brass pointed balls. The moulded arch door is carved with intricate blind fretwork mirroring the panels in the caddy top. Flanking the glazed door are rounded pillars which have brass reeded inlay and are topped with brass capitals. The arch brass and silvered dial has a matted centre with two winding holes, date aperture, second's subsidiary dial and a silvered cartouche bearing the makers signature in florid engraved script. The subsidiary dial in the broken arch top depicts strike/silent. In the corners are pierced Rococo spandrels with human face masks and sea creatures. The beautifully figured case has a moulded arch door in the trunk and the base is raised on a squared plinth. The movement is of a week's duration and strikes the hours on a single bell, with anchor escapement and seconds pendulum.
