About the Item

This tall and elegant horloge de parquet was crafted in Normandy, France, circa 1780. Built of solid oak, the stately grandfather clock stands on a molded straight plinth and features a tall case with paneled sides and a single long door, richly carved with floral and foliate motifs in relief. The bonnet is gracefully arched and decorated with a carved basket of flowers beneath a curved cornice adorned with bead and blossom details. The clock face is surrounded by an engraved brass dial with embossed floral patterns and a wheat-sheaf crest, enclosing a white enamel face with Roman numerals and decorative pierced hands. The dial is signed Vinaut à Alençon, referencing its maker and origin. The clock mechanism has been fully cleaned and checked, and remains in excellent working condition with its two original weights, pendulum, and winding key; it strikes the hour and half hour with clarity and precision. This refined provincial timekeeper is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, displaying a rich and warm oak patina. The longcase clock would make a superb addition to a formal dining room, entryway, or study. Measures: 20" W x 10" D x 94" H.
