19th Century French Louis Philippe Ebonized Wood and Gilt Bronze Portico Clock

About the Item

A large and impressive French Louis Philippe portico clock with complications. The ebonized wood case richly embellished with gilded bronze mounts; the 5? silvered dial with roman numerals is housed in a decorated gilded bronze bezel. The dial has two subsidiary dials, one, a seconds ring below the numeral XII, and a day of the month ring above numeral 6. The fifteen day twin barrel movement rings the hours and halves on a bell; the clock features a large gilded bronze gridiron pendulum. This type of clock with its architectural design and dark colour became popular after the Empire Period during the reign of Charles X and Louis Philippe.
