French Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock by Alphonse Alph Giroux, Signed, circa 1860

About the Item

Amazing and rare 19th century French gilt bronze clock surmounted by two finely crafted cherubs riding a chariot drawn by a pair of wonderfully detailed goats. Clock is in working condition. The blue clock face bears the name of Alphonse Giroux, important Parisian artisan. The movement also has the engraved signature "Alph Giroux a Paris" and the number 414. This clock is a beautiful example of the best of mid-19th century craftsmanship. The metal work boasts exquisite detail throughout. Radiant original gilt bronze accentuated by cobalt blue porcelain. An enamel hand painted porcelain base displays groups of cherubs in various musical scenes and is supported by gilt bronze work featuring grapevine and oak leaf motifs. Great antique condition with imperfections natural to its age and use. Porcelain blue dial has a crack/ hairline with a sign of repair. Bronze is excellent and well maintained, porcelain base is excellent. Clock has 8 day movement and beautifully chimes every half hour. Has a key and an original pendulum, working condition.
