Antique French Neoclassical Revival Mantel Clock & Urn Garniture Set

About the Item

A magnificent turn of the late 19th / early 20th century French three piece mantel set, retailed by the renowned Bailey Banks and Biddle, with movement by Samuel Marti of Paris. The stunning antique clock, circa 1900, features a shaped architectural black slate marble case with incredible grey variegated specimen marble accents, intricately decorated with incised carvings of floral and foliate, shield, scrollwork and contrasting gilt and silver highlights, an ornate ebonzied bronze ormolu mount on front and ebonized bronze ormolu figural lion mask with ring knocker handles on its flanks, a circular dial with gilded roman numerals, borders a gilt brass center with exposed open escapement and is signed "Bailey Banks and Biddle Philadelphia," behind a glass door with gilt metal bezel, housing the high quality Samuel Marti eight day time and strike movement stamped "S Marti et Cie- Medaille de Bronze," rising on patinated bronze claw foot with gold ormolu wings that wrap around the two front corners. The incredible craftsmanship and ornamentation continues on the matched marble and bronze neoclassical style flaming urn-form garniture pair, that complete the stunning original antique three piece set. Dimensions: (approx) Clock: 11.5"H, 12"W, 6"D. Corresponding garnitures: 14.5"H, 5.5"W, 3.75"D; Total weight: 35lbs. Excellent antique condition The clock is in need of a suspension spring and will not work until that is replaced.

The fine quality antique originating in France in the late 19th century, exquisite Parisian work, exceptionally executed in opulent, elegant, and sophisticated King Louis XVI style, timeless neoclassical taste, comprising: classical architectural case mantel clock, having pointed bronze doré finial, flanked by scrolled foliates and lyre motifs, fancy enamel dial with Arabic numerals, inscribed F. Lapointe, Paris, eight-day time-and-strike movement signed Samuel Marti 1900 (Paris, 1870-1890), original Apollo mask sun-burst pendulum hanging below clock drum, flanked by matched pair of two arm candlestick garnitures, each with matching scrolled foliates and lyre finial, tapering column support with two candle nozzles, rising on stepped molded base, terminating in patinated brass disc feet. Markings: Pendulum stamped "R" "1721" ormolu on clock & garnitures stamped "1321"; possibly attributed to R. Freres / Raingo Freres. Dial signed by French enameller "F. Lapointe, Paris" Movement stamped by the firm of well-known French clockmaker Samuel Marti et Cie, Paris, second half of 19th century.     A magnificent antique Black Forest carved three piece mantel clock and garniture set. circa 1880 Swiss or German, late 19th century, a truly extraordinary work of art, exceptionally executed, intricately sculpted and finely detailed throughout, hand carved from a single block of wood, featuring a leaping stag deer over elaborate naturalistic foliage, a pair of pheasants with inset glass eyes, wooden dial with gilt incised Roman numeral hour markers and eight day time-and-strike movement, sculptural interwoven root carvings on a conforming molded edge base, flanked by a hunting dog and mountain rescue dog, both with inset glass eyes, retaining the original pressed glass spill vases.     This ormolu (gilt bronze) mantel clock is a stunning piece of design, which features beautiful neoclassical style low-relief decorations and three-dimensional sculptures. The clock takes the form of a tall rectangular case with a circular white enamel dial near its top. This dial features black Roman Numerals and the maker’s signature, ‘Robin/ à Paris’. The dial is displayed behind a glass lens within a foliate bezel. The case is decorated in its upper corners with rosettes, and in the lower section with a stylised depiction of a swan. The case is topped by a sculpture of a wreath, propped up on a roll of paper or parchment. To the left of the case, there is a full-length statue of a man who wears a classical robe and holds a mirror. A lyre leans against the right side of the case.
