French Art Nouveau Mahogany Mantel Clock

About the Item

French Art Nouveau mahogany cased mantel clock with arch top above satinwood inlay depicting a Viking longboat at full sail. Enamel dial with Arabic numerals. Eight day movement signed ‘Couillet Freres’ striking the hours and halves on a coiled gong, circa1900 The ‘Dictionnaire Des Horlogers Francais’ by Tardy lists Couillet Freres as having been founded in St-Nicholas D’Aliermont in 1804 and having a retail outlet in Paris (Rue Oberkampf) circa 1900. The company registered a patent for a system of compensation for an escapement in 1868.
