French Empire Patinated Bronze and Ormolu Vase Clock

About the Item

French Empire patinated bronze and ormolu vase clock. Of unusual design set as it is on a spread ormolu base of eight sides, the front and back being long sides. The base sits upon four fine ormolu bun feet decorated with hatching. To the centre of the base is an applied ormolu mount of Anthemion flowers to each side of a forget-me-not. To the side on each of the first two canted corners are applied a large ormolu six pointed star. Above the base is a second eight sided ormolu base on which the ormolu foot holding the vase clock stands, this rises to an ormolu cup decorated with arrow and forget-me-not decoration. The cup holds the patinated bronze vase body which has an ormolu vase top decorated with palmettes. To each side is an ormolu handle and applied foliate ormolu mounts. The lid to the vase is ormolu and hand fretted and having concentric lines of palmettes and diamond patterns all surmounted by an acorn finial. The dial is of white enamel with Roman hour numerals and Arabic numerals at fifteen minute spacings. The fine ormolu hands are handcut and pierced. Surrounding the dial is an ormolu bezel decorated with diamond patterns and beading. The movement is of eight day duration, regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The clock strikes the hours and halves on a cast bell by means of the count wheel system. The movement is dated 1810 and signed Boursier who is known to have been working at the Rue Saint-Martin at this time.
