French Spherical Weight Mantel Clock

About

This French spherical weight mantel clock is as much a mechanical wonder as it is a work of art. Also known as a "Falling Ball" clock, the gilt brass timepiece is driven by the weight of steel balls which, when added by lifting the lion, power the driving wheel by falling onto its paddles. On reaching the bottom, the ball is returned to the bottom drawer, where they collect until added back into the mechanism. Another clock of this model was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris, where it was so widely celebrated that it was made the subject of an article in the Revue Chronométrique by the renowned horologist Mathieu Planchon. The intricacy of the clock’s inner workings are on full display thanks to the panes of glass that encase them. The gilt brass frame is adorned by champlevé enamel accentuating the exterior, while the time is told on a circular white enamel clock face enhanced with floral swags. Adding to the functionality of this clock is the inclusion of both a Fahrenheit thermometer and barometer to measure temperature and air pressure, respectively. The aneroid barometer is set below the dial, while an adjacent obelisk hold the thermometer. All of these traits combined make this mantel (fireplace) clock a functional work of art. This clock is pictured on page 74 of mystery, novelty and fantasy clocks by Derek Roberts, circa 1900 Measures: 11 3/8” wide x 6 1/2” deep x 21 1/2” high.
