Important Boulle Marquetry Clock, 19th Century

About the Item

This exceptional cartel presents a remarkable work of bronze and an ornamentation resuming the Boulle marquetry that can be attributed to Alfred-Emmanuel Beurdeley (1847-1919), a great Parisian cabinetmaker of the second half of the 19th century. The mechanism of our astronomical clock has three dials, one of which is the main one and the most important in size, indicating the hours by enamel cartouches. All around it one can also read the months of the year and the number of days they include. Two smaller dials, positioned next to each other below the main dial, indicate the days of the month as well as the lunar revolution on a midnight blue enamel background decorated with small golden stars. This impressive mechanism is framed by a sumptuous bronze decoration with extraordinary chasing and gilding in the Louis XIV style and arabesque motifs in brass. The four claw feet on which the cartel rests, go up on its sides by rich volutes inhabited by acanthus leaves, until reaching its top where thrones, triumphant, Mars child, with the determined face. He stands in front of a jungle of acanthus leaves falling on small dolphins in each corner.
