Large Neoclassical Carved Giltwood Mantel Clock Allegory of Time

About the Item

Estate lawyer direct must sell to settle probate .Presents very well with carved urns, parfum, floral bouquets, garlands and pyramid. Worn condition overall. Rubbing and chipped losses to gilding revealing red bole and bare wood in areas. Chipped losses to carved elements in areas. Some dirt accumulation. Wear around urns on plinth. Later metal back and glazing to bezel. With losses. Worn dial, embossed copper. Oxidation. With later associated sunburst pendulum. Original key. Working condition not guaranteed. Small dents and dings and time wear to finish . Most Photos of Giltwood case taken outside for true lighting . An Allegory to Time. Crumbling pyramid with weeds and broken hour glass implies passage and effects of time. Time conquers all. A favorite allegory particularly of the 18th century. Where death was common and life often short, Time weighed heavily upon some. Considering age in a stable condition with charming wear and appearance. Sturdy but does need a visit to a clock clinic. Even when clocks are in working order shipping usually disturbs the mechanics and time is off . Also to keep gears from gumming up should be cleaned every few years .

The urn stands on a table-shaped body which is surmounted by outward-pointing pinecone finials and laurel branches. The stepped tabletop has scalloped corners and is decorated with an egg-and-dart and leaf-and-dart band, as well as a central Green Man mask.
