Louis XVI Style Ormolu and Marble Mantel Clock

About the Item

This neoclassical style French mantel clock is crafted from patinated and gilt bronze in addition to flecked black and grey marble. The clock body is formed from a lopsidedly mounted gilt bronze clock drum, which is rectangular in shape. The gilt bronze drum is decked with gilt bronze mounts to each of its four front corners, the mounts framing the white enamel dial. The drum is surmounted by a pediment-type structure, which in turn is topped by a cockerel-form finial. To the left of the clock drum, a patinated bronze cherub stands leaning against the clock body. Both the cherub and the drum are supported by a rectangular base, formed from marble, which is mounted with a gilt bronze frieze and stands on gilt bronze feet. The dial, numbered with Roman numeral hours and Arabic numeral minutes, is signed ‘Gille L’aine / A. Paris’.
