French Empire Gilt and Patinated Bronze Figurative Clock of Cupid and Eurydice

About the Item

A palatial scale late French Empire mantel (fireplace) clock depicting cupid and Eurydice. The rectangular patinated bronze base sits on four lions paw feet and has a gilded frieze across the entire front depicting scenes of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. A patinated figure of a winged Cupid stands to the left of the rectangular plinth; the plinth is decorated with bronze mounts, stars, swags, lyre etc. including a cloaked gilded urn on top. The gilded dial has inset white enamel numerals between signs of the zodiac. The clock movement has its original silk-string suspension system ringing the hours and halfs on a bell, French, circa 1825. Dimensions: 37" H (94cm) x 22" W (56cm) x 9" D (23cm).
