George III Chinoiserie Japanned Longcase Clock

About the Item

The dial signed William Scafe, London, the arched hood with an elaborate caddy top surmounted by three carved giltwood flambeau pedestal urns above a gilt scroll pierced sound frieze and a pair of corresponding corners. All backed with red silk, the trunk with arched door, on square base and plinth foot, the whole decorated with gilt pagoda and figural landscapes, flowers and foliage, on a dark blue / black ground. The arched 12" brass dial with silvered Roman chapter ring with outer Arabic five minute divisions, sanded centre with a corresponding silvered subsidiary seconds below XII and date aperture below VI, and with pierced hands, the corners with scroll and urn spandrels. The signed silvered arch with subsidiary silvered strike / silent dial within foliate scrolling mounts, the brass four pillar movement with anchor escapement striking on a bell, with winder, case key, pendulum and twin weights, some alterations and redecorations.
