Important Late 19th Century Gilt and Patinated Bronze Mantel Clock

About the Item

A large and important late 19th century gilt and patinated bronze, French champlevé cloisonné enamel and wood mantel clock. The top figure is of Nike of Samothrace; the Greek Goddess of Victory. Two cherubs depicting exploration and mathematics circle the globe. The enamel dial is surrounded by a snake and sits on top of bat which itself rests on an open book depicting literature. The Fine wood base is adorned by four bronze dolphins on bronze legs.
