French Louis XV Style Black Chinoiserie Lyre Clock, Guilmet Paris, 19th Century

About the Item

A rare 19th century French Louis XV style black chinoiserie lyre clock with raised decoration. The case topped by embossed circular mounts and a bronze finial. The cream porcelain dial with black Arabic numerals with a decorative brass bezel surmounted by a ribbon with acanthus leaf spray. The clock sits on 3 adjustable bronze feet which facilitate balancing. Fitted with a French 8 day single train pendulum movement marked 'Medaille D'or Paris GLT BTe SCDC' for Andre Roman Guilmet. The clock is in good condition keeping excellent time, showing minor wear to the case consistent with age. André Romain Guilmet (1827-1892?) The French watchmaker André Romain Guilmet was born 1827 in La Ferté-Gaucher, France. He founded the watch manufactory Guilmet & Cie in Paris with the trademark ‘Brévété GLT SGCG’. Guilmet became well-known in 1867, when he patented his so-called 'mystery clock’.
