Vase Clock 19th Century Style Empire by Blanc Fils Palais Roya

About the Item

This finely chiseled vase clock was cast from bronze with gilded elements originated from the first half of the nineteenth century. The Empire style was based on elements of the Roman Empire and its culture, which had been rediscovered starting in the eighteenth century. Bronze was the main material used in Empire style timepieces and both the patina and ormolu techniques were extensively used for ornamentation during this period. Most clock cases were totally cast in bronze and others combined with a stone base made of marble, alabaster, porphyry or malachite. Vase-shaped clocks were often accompanied by the contrasting design of gilded bronze and patina bronze. The dial placed in the vase; the handles usually would take various types of forms: winged figures, swan necks, ram’s head, chimaeras, etc. Many models of these clocks are also executed in porcelain, mostly Sèvres or Paris, which were types of French porcelain revived in the early 19th century. This beautiful Empire style clock signed “Blanc fils Palais Royal” consists of finely chiseled and gilded bronze vase as well as gilded accent pieces. The ormolu handles are formed from the swan's neck, finished at the bottom where it is attached to the vase with a palmette resembling the fan-shaped leaves of a palm tree. The large white enamel dial has twelve Arabic numerals indicating hour and black Breguet hands, which means the tip of the hands have a hallow, moon-shaped tip and were featured in many Breguet watches. The dial is encompassed by a gilded framing with many intricate details. An ormolu tree branch with leaves and berries crossed in an x-shape and tied with an undulating ribbon surmounts the dial. In addition to that, underneath the dial is mounted a floral wreath tied on top with a big bow. Behind the vase is attached a swinging pendulum with a sunburst head. The vase rests on a gilded square base outlined with the anthemion motifs alternating with honeysuckle reliefs, above four rounded feet. Literature An identical model of this clock can be found in the Pierre Kjellberg, "La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe Siècle", 1997, p. 378, pl. C, however the surface of clock’s case depicted in the book has a brown patina finish and Roman numerals indicating time.
