Regency Period Bronze Oval Encrier

About

A good Regency period bronze oval Encrier, the lid with a candlestick, the two departments with stylised flowers, the main body well cast standing on paw feet. Original bronze patina. Very probably made by Messenger and Phipson. Samuel S Messenger & Sons. Founded before 1835 in Gloucester Place, Alston Street, Birmingham, moved to 19&20 Broad Street before 1888, making chandeliers, candelabra, lamps and gas fittings, exhibitor at 1851 Great Exhibition and others. The name occurs in the 1810s as Messenger and Phipson of Broad Street, Birmingham, manufacturers of 'plated' goods. Ceased trading in the early 1930s. Messenger and Phipson were also among the numerous manufacturers of lighting, operating in the brass-founding trade in Birmingham and Wolverhampton and highly productive during the 1830s. Comparative Literature: Christopher Gilbert, Country House Lighting 1660-1890, Temple Newsam Country House Studies. No.4. A similar design is discussed on page 1 45, item 1 21, with reference to a pair stamped Messenger in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
