About

Beautiful lapis lazuli box with hinged lid. The stone was mined in Afghanistan, then cut, polished and crafted for Creel and Gow in India. Afghanistan was also the main source of lapis for the ancient Egyptians Mesopotamians, as well as the Greeks and Romans. This semi-precious stone has been prized since antiquity due to its intense beautiful blue coloring and golden speckles. It was also used in the fine arts, in a crushed powder form, as a component of artist's pigments and, as such, was the most expensive pigment during the Renaissance period. One of the properties attributed to the stone is a cure for melancholy.
