Rare American Art Deco Nude Figural Lamp/Telephone Stand by McClelland Barclay

$2,250

About

This beautifully designed, Art Deco bronzed spelter female nude with inverted shell shade is the very rare "Venus", lamp/telephone stand, a limited edition creation by the celebrated American artist, McClelland Barclay. Famous for his iconic magazine illustrations, Barclay created this piece in 1931. The figure holds a light concealed under the shell and was designed to illuminate and hold the telephones of the period. (Two models of this design were produced one to hold a round based candlestick phone and one, this design, to hold an oval based handset and cradle phone). This example is in excellent condition overall with unblemished patina and even has the original brown felt lining to the telephone well. There is an impressed McClelland Barclay signature above the turn switch on the base together with a copyright for 1931 while on the cord is the seldom seen original two sided attribution metal tag reading "McClelland Barclay creator of the Fisher Body Girl and celebrated illustrator for Cosmopolitan, has now earned world fame as a sculptor." on one side and "The signature McClelland Barclay identifies this work of art as one of a limited edition created in his own studio." This stunning piece comes with an original oval based Northern Electric, 1935, manual D1, model 202, desk phone in excellent vintage condition with its felt covered base.
