Set of Bruno Munari for Danese Rosewood Rubber Mail Stamps
About the Item
Set of five rosewood and rubber mail stamps by Bruno Munari for Danese, Italy, c.1960s. Bruno Munari was an Italian graphic artist and industrial designer who created a large collection of office products and lighting for Danese and other Italian design brands. These are an especially rare design by him as they are made of rosewood and not aluminum or other metals that he commonly worked with.
There was a period of time when everyone had an “Air Mail” stamp in their office for those important documents they had to send overseas. However, rare was the occasion that this stamp had a rosewood handle to hold on to. This set of 5 stamps,”Personal”, “Air Mail”,”Express”, “Printed Matter” and “Registered” all feature the often coveted significant and stunning rosewood as their handle. Expensive and luxurious, chances are these were custom made for a very important business person and could be used today or would be equally as welcome as a collection on a shelf or in a curio cabinet.

Bruno Munari
In his prolific career, Bruno Munari was known for various contributions to art, industrial design, film, architecture, art theory, and technology. Munari’s principles and beliefs were built upon his early involvement in the Futurist movement, which he joined at the age of 19 using the pseudonym “Bum.” During the 1930s, Munari began to move towards Constructivism, particularly with his kinetic sculptures, Useless Machines (begun 1933), meant to transform or complicate their surrounding environments. Throughout his career, Munari was captivated by both a sense of whimsy and the manipulation of artificial light. After World War II, Munari also developed radical innovation in graphics, typography, and book publishing, through the latter creating pieces he would call Useless Books.
