About the Item

This exquisite pâte de verre sculpture by Amalric Walter captures an amber-hued cockatiel poised with quiet alertness upon a rocky outcrop, its form subtly animated by the interplay of light within the glass. The bird’s plumage is rendered in warm, translucent tones that deepen toward the core, imbuing the figure with a lifelike softness and inner luminosity characteristic of Walter’s mastery of the medium. Beneath its feet, the rock is enlivened by a naturalistic profusion of budding stems and gently unfurling leaves, their delicate forms suggesting the early stirrings of spring. The composition balances stillness with vitality, as the cockatiel’s attentive posture contrasts with the organic growth that surrounds it. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: An exceptionally complex method of creating in glass, pate-de-verre is a material produced by grinding glass into a fine powder, adding a binder to create a paste, and adding a fluxing medium to facilitate melting. The paste is brushed or tamped into a mold, dried, and fused by firing. The methodology was long for many centuries leading up to the Art Nouveau time period, but beautifully resurrected by such masters as Walter.
