About the Item

This is a superb antique 19th century French paperweight with a bronze model of a harpy raised on a stepped specimen marble plinth, also dating from the mid-19th century. In Greek and Roman mythology a harpy is a rapacious monster described as having a woman's head and body and a bird's wings and claws or depicted as a bird of prey with a woman's face. This high quality hot cast solid bronze harpy was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method. Condition: In excellent condition with only a few minor edge chips. As an antique item, this piece show signs of use commensurate with age, these minor condition issues are mentioned for accuracy and, as seen in the accompanying photographs, the paperweight displays beautifully. Dimensions in cm: Height 9 x width 11 x depth 11 Dimensions in inches: Height 3 inches x width 4 inches x depth 4 inches Lost Wax Method sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture. In Industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.
