Casper Netscher "the Toilette" Engraving 19th Century

About the Item

This engraving is by Albert Henri Payne after a painting by Casper Netscher. It is a steel engraving. It represents a scene of everyday life. Here, a young woman is sitting on a chair with a dog on her knee while another woman is finishing her hair. On the right, a richly decorated armchair is present with another woman's toilet on the seat and armrest. On the left, behind a table covered with a rich cloth, a young man appears to be assisting the woman. In the background, a four-poster bed and a painting with a landscape confirm the idea of a high standard of living. This engraving is based on an oil on canvas by Casper Netscher, a Dutch painter of the 17th century. Albert Henri Payne was a 19th century steel engraver, painter and illustrator. He was of British origin but eventually settled in Leipzig. This engraver is not well documented. Casper Netscher is mainly known for his portraits. He had William III of England as his patron. He often painted female figures with a great deal of detail (fabric, colour etc.) Dimensions: Leaf: 7.87 x 10.62 inches Visual: 6.29 x 8.26 inches.
