16th Century Mannerist Fireplace Pier Depicting Bacchus

About

"16th C. Mannerist Fireplace Pier Depicting Bacchus" circa 1550 Anonymous (Flemish) Carved Stone 23" x 7" x 10.5" inches Bacchus is the Greek god of wine. He represents not only the intoxicating power of wine, but also its social and beneficial influences. He is viewed as the promoter of civilization, a lawgiver, and lover of peace; as well as the patron deity of agriculture and the theater. An imposing carved stone Fireplace Pier in the Mannerist style. A carved face of Bacchus is centered near the top between the remnants of scrolls to an ionic capital. The figure wears elements of Flemish 16th century Flemish fashion. Below is a relief showing two figures grasp ribbons and chains. The grins on their faces possibly induced by being in an intoxicated state. One of a pair, the other’s location is unknown.
