18th Century Thai Carved Teak Wood Seated Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness

About

This spectacular seated Buddha sculpture from Thailand from the 17th-18th century displays the position of calling the earth to witness: during the meditation that will bring to the awakening, the Buddha resists the demon Mara’s assault and calls the earth to witness his determination. Here the Buddha is depicted in a characteristic Thai manner: pointed ears, conical and adorned usnisa or headpiece. This Thai statue is made of carved teak wood and its base is decorated with paint, glass and mother-of-pearl, which enhances its great refinement. This remarkable Buddha would be a stunning decorative item in most dens, and most certainly a wonderful conversation starter. Crack along base.
