Aldo Casanova Bronze Mushroom Sculpture

About the Item

Fabulous mushroom sculpture by Aldo Casanova (1929-2014), circa late 1970s. Called mushroom, this unique abstract sculpture with its original patina has amazing angles from all sides and sits on a blackened silver base. Unsigned but came from a collection with another Casanova sculpture. His catalogues from that time period also show his mushroom sculptures. Casanova has permanent collections worldwide including the Whitney Museum, UCLA Sculpture Garden, San Francisco Museum of Art, Joseph Hirshhorn collection, the American Academy in Rome, the National Academy of Design, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the California Institute of Technology and Scripps College, Claremont to name a few. In addition he was a professor of sculpture at Scripps College from 1966-1999. Inspired by nature, Aldo was acutely aware of its splendor and equally of our obligation to protect it. “I comment on the condition of the planet, political and environmentally, through my work,” he once said. His oeuvre includes both naturalistic portrayals, of animals for example, and abstract organic forms that evoke the generative power of the earth. Patina varies due to flash photos.
