Bloom Platter I by Studio Lel

About the Item

Bloom platter I by Studio Lel Dimensions: D30.5 x H30.5 x H2.5 cm Materials: Onyx, Marble The word Ara is the onomatopoeic genus of the macaw, referencing the sounds made by the bright parrots depicted in every piece of the collection. Set in one of Earth’s oldest living ecosystems, the rainforest, motifs of luxuriant flora and fauna are handcrafted with semi-precious stones such as serpentine, amazonite and jade. Naturally occurring shades of green within the serpentine create an effect of shifting light within a rainforest, while toucans and parrots in bright blue lapis lazuli and contrasting resins are inlaid with precision. The result is an endlessly detailed, exotic vista. These are handmade from semiprecious stone and marble in a small artisanal workshop. Please note that variations and slight imperfections are part of its design and unique charm. Lél is an artistic collective dedicated to preserving and evolving the 16th century Florentine and Mughal art of hand-crafted stone inlay. Lél’s founder, Farhana Asad, became fascinated by the technique of inlaid stonework known as parchin kari or pietra dura when she came across an exquisite box in a bazaar in northern Pakistan 25 years ago. She eventually tracked down its maker, an Afghan craftsman who agreed to give her lessons in the technique in her garage at home. Ever since, the Lél artist collective that Asad founded has opened its doors to both local craftsmen and artisans escaping the war across the border and worked to preserve the craft’s knowledge and skills for future generations, as well as exploring the creative possibilities of the technique.
