About

100% beeswax, frankincense essential oil, organic hemp wick and coloring. Sold with a white oak tray. This large scale candle is less about its shape than the way it burns, fast at first, revealing dramatic peaks and ridges, then very slowly as the wax spills out drawing convoluted motifs around it in an evocation of volcanic landscapes. Burning the candle becomes an experience between live painting, its tray being the canvas, and the contemplative hypnosis of a chimney fire. No two candles burn the same, and thus, no two candles tell the same story. Measures: 7.5” x 7.75" 10" tall 4.5 lbs Each candle is handmade in Oakland, CA. Both experimentation and experience are central components of our work. Each year, we aim to release one limited edition piece that deeply embodies those values and explores a field that we have most recently extensively worked on. This year, we have been experimenting with wax and casting techniques. The Candle Pit is a large-scale candle inspired by the landscapes of Iceland. Designed as a story that unfolds slowly, the candle is the result of research on both Japanese and French candle-making techniques, as well as the use of candles for rituals. It is less about its shape than the way it burns, fast at first, revealing dramatic peaks and ridges, then very slowly as the wax spills out drawing convoluted motifs around it in an evocation of volcanic landscapes. Burning the candle becomes an experience between live painting, its tray being the canvas, and the contemplative hypnosis of a chimney fire. No two candles burn the same, and thus, no two candles tell the same story. We see this exploration as an experience to share with someone over a glass of wine for the night. An experience reminiscent of the time before our need for Netflix binges, but with no less adventure. Each candle features 9 wicks.

AN ATTITUDE TOWARDS CRAFT UMÉ Studio is a design practice where traditional craft meets contemporary tastes in delicate yet purposeful objects for everyday living. Founded by Victor Lefebvre and Mei-Lan Tan, their studio is the final stop in their design process journey. They begin with months-long travels to artisan workshops in many corners of the globe to render century-old skills and techniques, collaborating with a network of artisans and designers dedicated to their craft. Keeping these traditions alive is essential to UMÉ—so is updating their forms and bringing these timeless techniques into the now to achieve authentic, distinctive designs. BEAUTY, FUNCTION, TECHNIQUE Victor and Mei-Lan formed UMÉ Studio after years of working together in architectural firms and a shared design ethos where technique leads to design, rather than design informing technique, as is the norm. GLOBAL VS LOCAL Victor and Mei-Lan so far have forged cultural connections and learned techniques in the USA, France, Japan, and Switzerland, and continue to deepen their ties to these countries as well as other locales in the world. ather than a singular brand, UMÉ Studio is a group of individuals pursuing their identity through craft around the world. The practice is at once global and local, with a focus on designing objects for the home that are for the everyday, meant to engage and incite curiosity, and connect people, their cultures and their histories.
