About the Item

Outstanding ceramic TOTEM by Jean Megard dated and dedicated to the 1954 exhibition of the "Groupe Espace" in Biot. This piece of Art has been exhibited all along summer 2016 at the Fernand Leger National Museum (see picture 2 between two Fernand Leger paintings) for a dedicated tribute to the Groupe Espace where Jean Megard took an active part both phylosophical and artistic. The Groupe Espace gathers round his Architect co-founder Andre Bloc some of the most renown Artists and Urban Planners such as Sonia Delaunay, Del Marle, Edgard Pillet, Jean Prouve, Richard J. Neutra, Arne Jacobsen, André Borderie, Victor Vasarely, Robert Jacobsen among others. Their goal, summarized in a 1952 Manifesto, is to bring in the after-war and reconstruction period the ideas of constructivism and neoplasticism in urban planning and social sphere. About the Artist : As a ceramist Jean Megard (1925 - 2015) took part in the early fifties to several exhibitions of two prestigious parisian galeries ; the Galerie Mai for whom he was the exclusive ceramist and the Galerie La Roue with such artists as Elizabeth Joulia and Valentine Schlegel. In 1952 he joined his friend André Bloc in the Groupe Espace. In 1968 Pierre Soulages selected Jean Megard in order to realize a gigantic ceramic wall for the entrance hall of the One Oliver Plaza; in Pittsburgh, which must be considered today as the unique ceramic piece of the Master. As a painter, he was in close connexion with Klein, Hartung, Messagier, Poliakoff and Zao Wou-Ki. The Vasarely foundation in Aix en Provence has dedicated to Jean Megard a special exhibition in 1990. As a sculptor he was the student of Ossip Zadkine and Leopold Kretz and a close friend of Cesar and Arman. He took part in several Parisian exhibitions mostly at the Espace Cardin during the 70's and some of his spectacular Bronze works are permanent decorative elements of the St Sauveur Cathedral in Aix en Provence.
