About

“Distortion” was created as an exploration into manipulating the rather symmetrical forms Richard has historically made. Through the building process, Richard methodically places each individual piece of wood controlling both the exterior wall profile as well as the thickness of the wall, slowly nudging each piece slightly inwards or outwards depending on the intended outcome. This sculpture consists of red and white oak, both virgin timber and old growth lumber that was salvaged from old mill buildings. The depth of color in this sculpture is a result from a reaction between iron and the tannins inherently found in oak, and the wide range of tones from deep dark black to warm rich browns is due to the differences and age of the woods Richard has collected. Inspired by the random appearance of old fieldstone walls along with the very precise and strategic manner in which they are constructed, Haining adopted this process for his craft. Beginning each piece with his vision and a box containing thousands of consistently milled scraps cut to random lengths, Richard builds the form hollow, piece by piece, layer by layer, all the while controlling the wall thickness and profile. The result is a terraced form which is then gently sculpted smooth using a variety of handheld tools, there is no lathe work involved in any of his work. The one-of-a-kind patterns made by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of basketry, ceramics, and mosaic tile work. The finely honed finished surfaces undulate ever so slightly under one’s hand, similar to that of hand built ceramics, inviting one to touch and take in the pleasure of the wood’s surface. This sculpture is one-of-a-kind.

View Profile
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
