Hand-Carved Pinewood Chain Sculpture by Anastasya Martynova the New Craftsmen

About

A large hand-carved sculpture, made without breaks and joins in a continuous chain. Carved from one single piece of pine, Anastasya is interested in pushing a natural material into new, unexpected configurations retaining the tactile feel of the wood. The open chain, a symbol of freedom, as well as representing the removal of a heavy weight upon one’s heart provided her initial inspiration, while at the same time conjuring childhood memories of play and feeling carefree through its scale and weight. It as if the object has a life of it’s own, depending on it’s arrangement. About Anastasya Martynova Anastasya Martynova is a London based artist, whose work blurs the distinction between fine and decorative art. Experimenting predominantly with the mediums of glass and wood, she creates striking one-off reverse-gilded glass illustrations and delicate wood carved sculptures. Despite the variety of mediums, all her work is rooted in the same set of principles - utilising the past craft knowledge in order to breathe life into her ideas and achieve a high standard, sympathetic finish that pays homage to the ingenuity and artistry of makers from the past. Anastasya completed a three-year diploma in Historic Woodcarving and Gilding at City & Guilds of London Art School, were she was awarded the Grinling Gibbons Scholarship by the Drapers’ Company and the William Wheeler Prize for Outstanding Work.
